You’ve read this before — and not all that long ago: Online retailing giant Amazon plans to open another nearly 1-million-square-foot fulfillment center in Oregon that will employ up to 1,000 people.
This time around, it’s not a facility in Hillsboro, Troutdale or Salem— three projects that have either come online or been announced in the past year — but one right here in Portland.
“Three Amazon fulfillment centers announced in three months adds to the company’s already robust presence in Oregon, which includes Amazon Web Services, Prime Now, and sortation centers,” said Business Oregon director Chris Harder, in a release. “Amazon could invest anywhere in the world, and they are showing over and over again that they believe Oregon is the place to build, innovate, and grow.”
According to documents from the Port of Portland, the new 918,400-square-foot fulfillment center will be located on Northeast Lombard Street on about 59 acres of land in the Port’s Rivergate Industrial District. Trammell Crow Company is the developer on the project, while Clarion Partners is the investment partner.
The team will lease the property from the Port and then sublease it to Amazon, which plans to open the facility in 2018. Port documents show the rent for the property will be just over $1 million a month.
In a release, Amazon said it would create more than 1,000 full-time positions at the new facility. It plans to hire 1,000 for the Salem center and 1,500 or more in Troutdale. The company also employs about 1,000 at a “sortation center” in Hillsboro.
“Amazon has embraced the value of our region as a great business environment, and we welcome the 1,000 quality jobs and benefits this new facility brings to Portland,” said Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, in the release.
“Portland’s innovation and talented workforce are a perfect match for Amazon’s cutting-edge approach to customer service and support.”
